Active license and active sales are different things
An active California real estate license authorizes activities within the licensee’s permitted scope and broker supervision. It does not obligate every licensee to represent buyers and sellers personally.
In a referral-only affiliation, the licensee’s brokerage work is limited to introducing potential clients to active professionals under brokerage policies. The receiving licensee handles the transaction.
What if your license is inactive or expired?
Being an interested former agent is not the same as being authorized to conduct licensed referrals. Someone with an expired license or an inactive affiliation must resolve DRE renewal and/or licensing status requirements before participating in activities requiring a real estate license.
You can still contact NEXA to discuss potential eligibility and what information the brokerage needs. See official California DRE licensee resources for state requirements.
Will you need MLS or REALTOR® membership?
Referral-only work does not involve using MLS data to list or sell real estate. REALTOR® and MLS membership obligations, however, are not removed simply by using the words “referral-only.” LFRO dues exceptions have conditions and typically require association certification.
Before changing memberships, verify your own eligibility and the applicable association’s process.
Do you still need continuing education?
Continuing education and license renewal obligations generally continue while you hold and renew a California real estate license, even if your referral activity is occasional. Confirm the current requirements with the California DRE for your license type and situation.
Your next step
Review what LFRO means, how NEXA referrals are handled and request program information before making licensing changes.
